Taking a behind-the-scenes look at Forgotten Bookmarks, I found Popek’s Used and Rare Book Store – the very source of those ever-intriguing old ephemera bits that we look forward to daily. Seeing the photo of smiling Michael Popek among the towering shelves of books in the accompanying Press and Sun-Bulletin article increases my happiness-factor, making me smile too. Until you can get over to Popek’s in person (and you know you want to!) visit Unmoderated’s Etsy shop or Popek’s at Biblio.com.
Reading about Popek’s reminds me of the used bookstore my brother, Leo A. Schifferli, owned in Bowling Green, Ohio – Pauper’s Books!
When I told Leo about Forgotten Bookmarks, he mentioned that a former customer had discovered a forgotten Pauper’s bookmark in a copy of Paterson by William Carlos Williams. Finding that purple bookmark, printed with the motto PAUPER’S BOOKS will drive you simply NUTS prompted that customer to write this insightful reminiscence of my brother and Pauper’s Books.
Leo currently spends his time as caregiver, real estate appraiser, naturalist, book dealer, forager and recreational volleyball player. His research projects-in-progress include Wood County OH, the 1893 Chicago World’s Columbian Exposition and the lives of Edwin Lincoln Moseley and A. Roy Knabenshue.
Do you have a Pauper’s Books memory of your own? Or a Pauper’s Books bookmark keeping place in a favorite book?

It sounds intriquing and wonderful! What a great idea. It must certainly be a unique book store, one I’d like to visit.

Karen, Sounds like a roadtrip . . . destination: Popek’s! I’ve loved used bookstores ever since my brother took me to Appleton’s in Kokomo when I was young. Located off the beaten path, that shop was crammed full, with shelves towering over me, looking none too stable. Does anyone else have Appleton memories?
